Oil spilled into the sea as the X-Press Pearl container ship sank off Sri Lank’s Colombo

SriLankan ship was carrying 1486 containers and about 25 tonnes of nitric acid and other chemicals, falling off of some container may have led to blast and a major fire IndiaCoastGuard ships Vaibhav and Vajra beside Dornier aircraft enroute for assistance. 

Oil spilled into the sea as the X-Press Pearl container ship sank off Sri Lank’s Colombo coast, prompting experts to warn that the spill could significantly damage marine life and nearby coastal areas

SriLanka authorities rescues 25 foreign crew members onboard a cargo ship which was engulfed in flames off the Colombo Harbour, while the Navy said an explosion was heard within the vessel earlier in the day 

There are signs of oilspill in to the ocean from the X-Press Pearl vessel. Department of Fisheries is working together with MEPA, Navy, CoastGuard and other authorities to contain and clean up the oil spill to minimize the damage to the marineenvironment. 

The MV X-Press Pearl, a Singapore flag vessel on fire at Colombo anchorage SriLanka. The vessel had left the Hazira port in India on May 15 and was on its way to Singapore. Cargo onboard is Chemicals and Fire has worsened. Indiannavy sending assistance.

Sri Lankan authorities have expanded operations to put out a fire  on a burning container ship off the coast of Colombo.
