Russia reports 17,611 new COVID-19 cases, 450 deaths 

Moscow reports 17,611new coronavirus cases, the biggest one-day increase on record Russia's capital Moscow on Saturday registered 17,611 new coronavirus infections in 24 hours, a second consecutive high, according to government figures.

Moscow's Covid19 cases soar to a new high in last 24 hours, with authorities suspecting new coronavirus variants to be behind the surge. The daily infections in the Russian capital have spiked from 3000 to 9000 to 17000 in just a few days.

The Delta variant is spreading rapidly in Russia, with Moscow cases tripling to highest-ever daily total. Officials are pleading with a skeptical public to get vaccinated. The surge is "something of a surprise," Moscow's mayor says.
