Prime Minister Boris Johnson says the situation with Omicron is extremely difficult and the arguments on further restrictions are finely balanced but stresses that the Government reserves the possibility to take further action

Government rules out new measures before Christmas, but will keep Covid19 data under constant review. Speaking after Cabinet, BorisJohnson said we will have to reserve the possibility of taking further action to protect the public and our NHS 

Official figures from the UK Health Security Agency confirm that there are now 8,044 new cases of the Omicron COVID variant in the latest 24-hour period taking the total number of cases to 45,145
