UK has recorded its highest daily number of new Covid cases



UK has recorded its highest daily number of new Covid cases of the pandemic so far with a further 78,610 infections reported in the latest 24 hour period. 

A new 165 people have died in the UK within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, taking the total to 146,792. A new 4,671 confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 have been reported in the UK, including some cases in England delayed from yesterday by a data issue, taking the total to 10,017.

656,711 Covid booster and third dose jabs have been administered in the UK, taking the total to 24.7 million.

WHO said preliminary evidence suggests that coronavirus vaccines may be less effective against infection and transmission linked to the Omicron coronavirus variant, which also carries a higher risk of reinfection.
