UK reports 178,250 daily coronavirus cases and another 229 deaths in last 24 hours



A new 178,250 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in the UK. A new 229 people have died within 28 days of a positive Covid test, taking the total to 149,744.

A news 231,856 Covid booster and third dose vaccinations have taken place in the UK, taking the total number administered to just over 35 million.A total of 16,163 patients are in hospital in England with Covid, a rise of 30% week-on-week, and the highest level since 17 February 2021.

From 11th January in England, people who receive a positive lateral flow test for COVID-19 won’t be required to take a confirmatory PCR test. They should continue to self-isolate..

Wales's First Minister Mark Drakeford has aimed a blistering attack at Boris Johnson, calling England a 'global outlier' in the fight against the Omicron wave of Covid-19.
